Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus produces levels of blood sugars which are above the norm. There are two categories, labelled Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is a typically what affects young people. It strikes when the body is failing to produce the level of insulin required to remove excess sugar from the body. The only way this disease can be helped is to ensure insulin is provided to compensate for the insulin lost from pancreas. Typically, Type 2 diabetes affects the older generation. It affects the sufferer whereby insulin is produced by the body but the body fails to respond.
Diabetes mellitius has struck 20.8 people in the United States. That is 7% of the country. What's very concerning is that close to six million are unaware of their condition. Diabetes takes both genetics and the environment into account before it selects whom it will afflict. Type 2 diabetes is not helped by obesity and other poor dietary habits.
Many who are not suffering from diabetes mellitus are suffering prediabetes, also known as insulin resistance. The body fails to respond adequately to the insulin produced by the pancreas but the situation is not so bad at this stage that the blood sugar levels raise. There are a high amount of insulin in the body but it is adequate to make up for the blood sugar. There comes a time a few years on however where many prediabetics do develop diabetes.
There are a few tests which can determine the presence of diabetes mellitus. The first test to be taken is a fasting blood sugar. Typically this is under 100mg per deciliter. In prediabetics, that often raises to between 100 and 120mg per deciliter. It often reached above 120mg per deciliter among diabetics and often way beyond that.
The other test to determine diabetes mellitus is known as the three hour glucose tolerance test or 3hr GTT for short. A fasting blood sugar is obtained followed by a bottle containing a fluid with high sugar concentration. After an hour, the blood sugar is tested. It is tested further two hours and three hours after drinking the liquid. If a number of above 200 appears at any time, then the patient is diagnosed with diabetes.
There is a further test for diabetes mellitus which checks the glycosylated hemoglobin level. Basically this is the amount of sugar coated blodd cels contained within the body. Any number found above the normal level of six determines the patient as being diabetic.
The type of diabetes determines the traeatment given to a diabetes mellitus sufferer. Type 1 irarely fails to be treated with insulin shots. This is due to the fact that insulin needs to be replaced as the pancreas is not putting any out. Medication and diet are often the administered treatments for diabetes. Medicine are of the type that have cells respond better to the insulin that is provided by the pancreas. There are medications that exist to directly reduce the blood sugar.
